They said the bunkers would protect us... They lied.
Requiring no more than the slightest skin-to-skin contact, the mysterious disease known as the Flense spreads with ruthless stealth and speed, decimating mankind before it can even react. The infected, still living, are turned into soulless creatures called Wraiths. They are brutal killer that wreak destruction upon everything in their path.
Secure inside ten isolated bunkers are Humanity's survivors, all working independently in hopes of unraveling the mystery of the scourge. But the bunkers were never meant to protect forever. In fact, they were never meant to protect at all.
The series currently consists of 4 full-length novels.

Contain (book 1)
Three years. That's how long Finnian Bolles has been hiding inside the impregnable walls of the hydroelectric complex known as Bunker 8. Three years, with enough resources to last him and the other thirty survivors three more. But then a series of disturbing events culminates in the sudden appearance of a stranger at their door. Before he too falls victim to the mysterious sickness known as the Flense, he warns them of a fate more horrific than the one they've been avoiding. But to prevent it, they must leave and seek a place many insist doesn't exist, a mythical twelfth bunker. |

Condemn (book 2)
Three years after the Flense decimates civilization, Finnian Bolles and a dozen survivors flee the security of Bunker 8 and the murderer it protects. Hoping for clues to the plague and a possible cure, they seek the mysterious Bunker 12. But Finn splits away to search for his brother, fracturing the group, and rendering them vulnerable. Soon, they'll discover that there are monsters far more terrifying in the barren wasteland than Wraiths. Now it's not just their lives on the line, it's their sanity and their souls. |

Control (book 3)
A psychopath has kidnapped Finn's twin brother and promises to infect him with the Flense, a synthetic virus that turns the vulnerable into vicious killing machines with a taste for human flesh. But before he can rescue his brother, Finn is betrayed by someone close to him and is turned over to a madman bent on vengeance. But what form will it take? For the other Bunker 8 survivors, it's a race against time to find the elusive twelfth bunker and the promise of a cure. Will they prevail soon enough to help Finn and his long-lost brother? Or will their fate be the same as all the others who tried, and failed, to survive THE FLENSE? |
|
Consume (Book 4)
A tragic accident inside the long-abandoned tenth bunker has left Finn clinging to life, and his friends facing the possibility that the nanites injected into their bodies, the same nanites that decimated Humanity four years earlier, might not be enough to save him. Should they carry on alone searching for the elusive Bunker Twelve and the cure to the Flense? Or give up and return to Westerton Army Base to spend the rest of their days fighting off the Wraiths? And when a hated enemy offers help in finding the so-called source of the Flense and a promise to put an end to their misery, do they trust him? Or is it a ruse which will finally destroy them once and for all? |

Without a family, man, alone in the world, trembles with the cold.

The first warning alert came just minutes past four in the morning. As gently as she could, Mara Bolles slipped her arm from beneath the heavy covers, reached high over her daughter’s shoulder, and plucked the vibrating phone off the makeshift shelf.
But Leah had woken, too. She glanced over, her eyes, lit by the dim light from the screen, flashing with alarm. “Where?” she whispered. Wisps of fog eddied from her pursed lips.
“Other side of the river,” Mara replied, her own voice barely audible. “One of the pressure sensors.”
She held the phone up so they could both stare at the screen. The frigid air caressed her bare arms, leaving gooseflesh in its wake. At last, the pulsing red marker faded to pink.
“False alarm?”
“Maybe. No, I don’t think so.”
“Bear?”
“Not this late in the season.”
“Then a moose.”
Mara didn’t reply this time, but from the grim set of her jaw and the tension in her eyes, Leah knew her mother didn’t think it was that either. Moose rarely visited the hilly terrain in which the cabin was nestled. They only came if something was driving them up from the marshlands below.

Civility is the first casualty of self-destruction.
There was a crunch and a jolt, and the back of the van kicked to the left. Harrison cranked the wheels to keep them going straight, but they were no match against the mass of the logging truck. “The bumpers are locked!” he yelped.
As they continued their suicidal march toward the edge of the cliff, the rig began to push the van ahead of it, plowing it sideways.
Bix glanced through his window and screamed.
Harrison shot a glance over his left elbow and very nearly screamed, too. He jerked the steering wheel into the skid, and the van completed the spin, smashing sidelong into the truck’s grill. There was a snap and a screech of metal as the bumpers released, and he slammed his foot onto the gas pedal. For a fraction of a second, nothing happened. Then the rig’s front tires left the roadway, bouncing on rubbery shocks, and the impact sent the van skittering across the narrow ribbon of gravel and threatened to send it rolling. There was another earsplitting scrape as they sideswiped the guardrail. One of the thick wood posts splintered with a resounding report. Stainless steel groaned. The truck cab bounced again when its rear tires left the road, thrusting them both forward again. The left rear wheel of the van hopped onto the uprooted and horizontal guardrail. They were moments away and inches from losing the battle.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

Want to know the last thing I said to Maggie as I headed out the door?
Raj shows no interest whatsoever. He sits and stares out the window at the columns of vehicles lined up beside us, all waiting to cross the bridge. Our headlights wash over them, bathing them in blue-white light. Swarms of mayflies eddy in the shallows where the deeper shadows merge. It’s so quiet I can hear a baby crying somewhere, and I think to myself that someone should go and check on it. But Preston had ordered us not to get out of the truck under any circumstance, unless he first said it was okay to do so, which he hasn’t.
The baby reminds me of Lizzie crying to be fed in the middle of the night. It’s a lonely sound. It makes me feel helpless.
The last thing I said was that I’d be back soon, safe and sound. Can you believe that?
Given what’s been happening around the country, it was kind of a stupid thing to promise, but what else was I supposed to do? She was begging me not to go, giving me ultimatums I couldn’t accept, even though I wanted to stay home. How could I convince her I had no choice in the matter, without telling her everything? Anyway, she’d just say we make our own choices. Usually I’d agree with that, but not this time. This time was different. I had to do this or risk losing her forever.
